A day with him…
It happened in the month of July, 2006…
One evening in the month of July, I went to our Journalism Department and kept some of my completed assignments on the table. I was about to come back to the hostel. At that time ma’am called me and said, “Vijay, a media person is coming to our department from Bangalore. If you want to meet him just wait for a while.”
As a student of journalism I was very eager to meet him. Just after 5-10 minutes he arrived and I welcomed him at the door.
“I wanted to meet you since many days” he said as though he knew me since many years.
I was happy for a moment for being recognized by an elderly and well-read person.
Our friendship turned out to be a ‘close friendship’ in the later days. I used to meet him whenever he visited coastal towns like Kundapur, Udupi, Karkala etc. We used to discuss many issues of social relevance.
Once I met him in Karkala. He was on an official visit to Karkala. As usual we discussed many issues.
Since my childhood days I was interested in Socialism, Nationalism, Gandhian principles and many such ‘isms’. I was always worried which one is the better among those ‘isms’.
“Sir, according to you which ‘ism’ is the superior and which ‘ism’ is inferior” I posed a question towards him.
His answer was right to the point.
“Look Vijay, none among these is inferior or superior. All isms have their own principles. All of them want a better society. Intention or aim of all isms is to combat poverty, illiteracy, casteism and many such social evils. It is true that many social movements have deviated from their core ideology. It is also true that many (if not many, some) isms fight with each other just to establish their supremacy. But I strongly believe that all isms should come under the same roof and fight social evils like corruption, blind-belief etc…”
Saying this he kept quite for a while.
Till then I had not met such a person in my life. Everyone I met, except him, was accusing others and was justifying their ideologies. But he was a man with a difference.
But those who divide this nation on the basis of ideologies and religion must understand the inner meaning of his words.
